Windows 10 End of Support: Your Options After 14 October 2025
What end of support means
Microsoft says that after 14 October 2025, computers running Windows 10 will still function, but Microsoft will no longer provide:
- technical support for any issue
- software updates
- security updates or fixes
Microsoft warns that without continued updates your PC is at greater risk from viruses and malware.
Your options
- Upgrade the current PC to Windows 11. If it meets the minimum system requirements and is eligible, you may have received an upgrade notification. To check, go to Start, Settings, Update and Security, Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft also points to its PC Health Check tool.
- Buy a new PC with Windows 11. Microsoft suggests this if your PC is not eligible.
- Enrol in Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft says the consumer ESU program can protect a Windows 10 device until 12 October 2027. It recommends ESU or replacing the device if the PC cannot run Windows 11.
What we recommend checking first
- Is your PC eligible for the free upgrade? Run the check before spending money.
- Back up your files before upgrading.
- If you stay on Windows 10 with ESU, note the end date of 12 October 2027.
We have not covered ESU pricing or enrolment steps because the page we checked does not state them in the section we verified.
