Why You Should Install Software Updates Promptly (and Turn On Auto-Update)

Blog

The reason

CISA says many people select Remind me later when an update alert appears, but many software updates are created to fix security risks. If a criminal gets into a device through a security flaw, they will look for sensitive information to exploit. Technology providers issue updates to patch security weak spots as quickly as they can, and if you do not install them they cannot protect you. CISA adds that updates can also fix bugs.

Three steps

  1. Watch for notifications. Devices usually tell you updates are needed. Install all of them, including for operating systems, programs and apps, and especially for your web browsers and antivirus software.
  2. Install as soon as possible, especially critical updates. CISA says criminals will not wait, so you should not either.
  3. Turn on automatic updates. Look in the device's settings, possibly under Software or Security, or search the settings for automatic updates.

A related warning

When a system reaches end of support, updates stop. For example, Microsoft stopped providing security updates for Windows 10 after 14 October 2025 (see our Windows 10 guide). Staying on an unsupported system raises your risk.

Checklist

  • Phone: turn on automatic updates.
  • Computer: update the operating system and browser.
  • Apps: enable auto-update, or check monthly.
  • Security software: set it to update automatically, as the FTC also advises.
